The London Olympics 2012

This Rant started life as a letter to a friend in the UK, However, I feared he would think it directed against him and so it is a Blog that nobody will ever read instead. Nevertheless I feel better! My thanks to Henry Chu of the LA Times for stirring my passion.

The LA Times gave a half page on page 3 over to the London Olympics this morning (07/13/2012). More to the point, the main thrust of the article was a catalogue of the failures already apparent, weeks before they even begin. Reading the article by an LA Staff reporter, I tried to forget that this was my home for the better part of 30 years and look on it as I would if it were in " A far away Country of which we know nothing" as Chamberlain said of Sudetenland in 1938. My conclusion is that London and indeed the whole UK is a part of the greater third world. Greater because it includes stupidity as well as poverty.

The success of London's bid for the 2012 Olympics was announced to the world on July 6th 2005, 7 years and 1 week ago today. Yet here are some of the problems still being discussed with only 2 weeks left! The closure of the M4 Motorway,(did no one think to check Bridges etc in say 2006?) the inability of authorities to re -open it in time or even at the promised time. The inability of trained security staff to locate guns and bombs planted on volunteers. The misuse of Her Majesty's Armed Forces as guards because the guards could not guard a flock of sheep. The construction of so many open air stadia in spite of the fact that it has been known to rain in the UK in Summer. The rip off prices for food and drink within the Stadia and the refusal to allow people to source their own food. The debacle over who will get the Olympic Stadium afterwards. The pathetic performance of the Home Secretary in the Commons yesterday. The equally pathetic daily performance of the "Leader of the Opposition" How could anyone ever vote Labour with that schoolboy in charge? And on and on and on............. A big thank you to the UK Government, Terrorists, would be Terrorists and NIMBYs who have done so much to make my former homeland look as if populated by a  bunch of amateur Jobsworths in a world of industrialized and civilized countries NOT run by morons dictated to by the mores of political correctness.

I do not take kindly to being made to look an idiot by virtue of the publicity inspired by that inept bunch back there in Middle Earth. Did you know you could drop the whole UK into the State of Michigan, merely 1 of 50. Or Texas where nobody would even notice? Perhaps that is what should happen to the whole sorry place. God help the British Citizens who work or try to work for a living instead of expecting handouts. This is the nation that formed the greatest Empire of the modern world, that dominated the waves that gave birth to the modern world with the Industrial Revolution. My God they must all be spinning in their graves. My compliments to Mr. Nigel Farrange, the sooner you and the United Kingdom Independence Party take over the better.

 End of Rant!

  1. My dear chap i am the English friend you speak of, and i echo you sentiments entirely. The UK has become a third world country. A steady decline in morality and social standards, underpinned by a third rate education system that was once the envy of the world. We have seen of late with the Levinson inquiry in to press and the politicians and even the police, institution are that were once the pillars of our nation now shown to be corrupt. Let alone the banking scandal that has shown the depths of malfeasance that is at the heart of the banking sector.

We are ruled by political elite who have for decades gorged themselves in trough of public money. Completely out of touch with people and above reproach, they carry on as if there were an endless pot of money the BoE can print. Yet as the country is buckling under the weight of more borrowing we throw vast sums of money at an event, that in truth most people have no interest in. This is just grand standing to the rest of the world that we are still a still up there with the best.

The Olympic mandarins will say well it's on time and on budget, well it sure is on time I will grant them that, but on budget? In fact some will say it's under budget. When London bid for the Games seven years ago the predicted cost of staging the Olympics and Paralympics was put at £2.37bn. This had ballooned to £9.325billion by 2007,That figure has now spiralled to more than £12billion and could reach as much as £24billion, If you keep moving the goal post you will always be under budget. This at a time when we have old people waiting in hospital corridors for days just waiting to get a bed.

As i move irrevocably into my older years i can hardly recognise the country of my youth such is the decline. May be it's just old age and healthy lump of pessimism but i do fear for our once green and pleasant land.

i will leave my views on the EU for another time, as one can only rant for so long.

My best wishes to you my dear friend; I hope your life in sunny California is better than the one in the windswept rain drenched UK.
